Democracy’s Not dead, It’s Resting.

Not quite. They are not only ignoring, but actively trying to dismantle the Constitution and rule of law in favor of the fringe “Unitary Executive” emergency powers fantasies of Curtis Yarvin and P25, but the wheels of justice turn slowly, and their political capital is all but spent. The MAGA cults’ core is too small to matter, and the coalition of ignorance and greed that he clowned into existence doesn’t exist anymore, whether they realize it or not. Things will get much worse over the next few months, as the mad scramble to steal what can be stolen, con who can be conned, and bend what can’t be broken goes into feverish overdrive, but nothing they have even hinted at yet will be enough to keep the house from flipping, and they are so monumentally stupid and greedy that they could still lose the Senate, too. Then the subpoenas start. The articles of impeachment are being drafted as we speak. Once people start going to jail, the opportunist will climb over each other to make deals for testimony. An historic number will go down at once. This much is, IMHO, all but inevitable.

But.

The pendulum has swung SO far now, that we currently have an incredible amount of potential, political energy stored in it; like the global, pro-US energy Bush squandered after 9/11, but much more focused. We have an opportunity to do better than the usual scapegoating and lip service that follow lesser scandals. This coming moment rivals the most pivotal ones on our history. MAGA is on the ropes while NYC has a clear-eyed, pragmatic, charismatic socialist mayor. Once the gangrene is cut out of the body politic, will be able make real change, like the New Deal, the Emancipation, the drafting of the Constitution itself. We have a shot at universal health care, at purging dark money from politics, at a Green New Deal, an inclusive one this time.

But.

We can’t let their circus act get mistaken for truth. We can’t lose hope. That’s the only way the get away with this stupefyingly brazen smash and grab, and they know it. We’re not going to create utopia, but we are going to make things a whole lot better for everyone, and soon. Unless the morons push the button, ofc, but there’s nothing we can do about that, so I’m trying not to waste too much time thinking about it.

Instead, we need to be thinking of what a better world looks like, ’cause now’s our chance to make the real one look more like that.
